Current State:
India is a large, emerging market and growing trade partner for Virginia.
Issues Facing Virginia:
• India's middle class includes 350 million people. That's more than the entire United States'
population. Second only to China, India will have the second largest urban population by
2016.
• Indian imports of American goods exceeded $10 billion in 2006; their exports to the United
States were $18.7 billion.
• Neither The Virginia Port Authority, Virginia Economic Development Partnership, nor Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has representation in India.
Task Force Goals:
• Create a strategy that enables Virginia businesses to keep up with the rapid pace of Indian
economic growth.
• Create a long-term plan to ensure Virginia's trade with and investment from the Indian market.
Illustrating the Value:
In recent years, India - which presents a huge opportunity for Virginia businesses - has developed strong commercial ties with the U.S. We need to plan now for Virginia's future with India. The
country's economic growth, rule of law and democratic political system ensure long-term potential for profitable links with Virginia and its businesses.
