Current State:
One strategy that international companies employ to enter into the U.S. market is purchasing
existing U.S. companies that provide the same or similar products or services. This allows foreign- owned companies to gain marketshare.
Issues Facing Virginia:
• International companies interested in acquiring U.S. companies are confronted with numerous regulations and requirements. However, there is no single point of contact in Virginia to help these companies identify and address issues.
• International companies have no resource in Virginia to help them identify companies suitable for merger or acquisition.
Task Force Goals:
• Define the services and agencies most likely to be needed by a foreign-owned company when
conducting a merger or acquisition in Virginia.
• Develop a network of Virginia resources to assist foreign-owned companies in their
merger/acquisition target company searches. Complement this network with a clearing-
house that can direct interested companies to the resources that they need.
Illustrating the Value:
The acquisition of Dan River, Inc. by Gujarat Heavy Chemicals, Ltd., an Indian soda ash maker, is a true success story. This acquisition enabled Virginia to retain valuable jobs in Danville, Va., while also enabling GHCL to expand its presence in the United States.
