What is VITAL?

The Virginia International Trade Alliance (VITAL) is a partnership between the public and private sectors to focus on international trade, including foreign direct investment, exports and imports.

Supported by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and The Virginia Port Authority, VITAL provides Virginia's business community with the chance to benefit from expanded opportunities internationally. As a non-profit, public-private entity, VITAL creates opportunities for Virginia's business - large and small - to partner, share best practices and learn from one another.

Work Completed To-Date

After starting in the spring of 2007, VITAL's initial focus included 10 task forces with members from the private sector. These areas included:

VITAL members met to answer three strategic questions:

  1. Where are we now?
  2. Where can we be?
  3. What do we need to get there?

In September 2007, each task force presented a report to Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Patrick Gottschalk.

Of the more than 60 recommendations presented, VITAL chose 18 initiatives for 2008. These initiatives — which range from establishing a referral network for international inquiries to developing an international marketing slogan for Virginia — will fuel Virginia's international economic engine to drive trade, investment and job creation. As a result, all Virginians will benefit from a thriving economy and greater prosperity.

Charting Our Course for the Future

VITAL's work aims to put Virginia business at a competitive advantage internationally and position the Commonwealth as a hub for global business. While the immediate focus areas for 2008 are being addressed, VITAL will continue to shape key international trade issues in future annual work plans.
